While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

As Culinary Director at The Crestone, my hospitality background prepared me well for this role. I bring the same high standards for food quality, service, team leadership, and financial management. The difference is that those skills now support a community where consistency and resident satisfaction matter every day.

That combination inspired me to transition into senior living. It is also where I see my long-term career. The work offers a chance to use strong hospitality practices in a more personal way.

In a traditional restaurant, service often ends when the meal is over. In a senior living community, dining is part of daily life. Each meal is a chance to build trust, create comfort, and strengthen connection with residents.

Residents have also taught me to enjoy life while we can. Their experiences are a reminder to appreciate the present and not take everyday moments for granted. A shared meal, a smile, or a familiar conversation can carry more meaning than we realize.

Knowing Residents by Name

One favorite tradition is Candlelight Dinners. These events give the dining team a chance to create something special for residents. They also bring an added sense of celebration and hospitality to the community.

Success in a senior living dining program starts with resident engagement. Food quality matters, but the relationships behind the meal matter just as much. Taking time to know residents helps create a more personal experience.

That includes learning likes, dislikes, and daily preferences. It also means greeting residents by name and making them feel known. These small details can turn ordinary service into something meaningful.

One moment that shows the impact of this work is receiving positive feedback from residents. When residents notice that their preferences are remembered, it makes a difference. When they are greeted on a first-name basis, they feel seen and valued.

Those responses are a reminder that hospitality is personal. A good dining experience is not only about what is served. It is also about how residents feel when they sit down at the table.
