Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Heather Maxon, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The Crestone, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Feeling Part of the Community From Day One

A successful move-in experience begins when a new resident starts to feel like part of the community right away. That means creating opportunities for involvement, engagement, and connection from the very beginning.

Resident Ambassadors help make that possible. They are excited to meet new neighbors and welcome them into community life. Their enthusiasm helps set a positive tone, showing new residents that friendly faces and meaningful connections are waiting for them.

Simple gestures can make a big difference during those first days. Sitting with someone during meals, inviting them to events, or helping them feel included from the start can turn an unfamiliar place into somewhere that already feels more like home.

Sharing the Resident Perspective

One meaningful example happened before a new resident even moved in. She came to The Crestone to try the food, and a group of residents invited her to sit at their table. They talked with her throughout the meal and made her feel included and welcomed.

That moment left a lasting impression. The resident felt pleased with the experience because she was able to see the warmth of the community through the people who live there. Sometimes, the best welcome comes from simply being invited to join the conversation.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they are the ones living the experience every day. This is their home, and they know it inside and out. Their point of view is different from someone who works in the community because they can speak directly to what it feels like to live there.

Resident Ambassadors shape the culture of the community by being the first friendly faces new residents meet. They set a positive, engaging tone and reflect the values of the community through kindness, connection, and inclusion. Their perspective is one of the most important parts of the welcome because they show new residents what life in the community truly feels like.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
