Cultivating Community Culture

Category: Culture & Traditions

Author: Amanda Houze-Thompson, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at The Crestone Senior Living, I am the energy and engagement designer of the community. My job description specifically states I am to be a “Culture Creator.” Each day, I work to set the perfect tone for our community events and resident engagements. Providing socialization opportunities in senior living is more than just playing the beloved game of bingo. Beyond the events, essential amenities, and daily care lies the heartbeat of every community – a culture that fosters connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

Each monthly calendar features events tailored to the residents’ interests, focusing on key programming elements: physical, cognitive, spiritual, sensory, and social. We always celebrate major holidays in a big way, incorporating traditions from various cultures based on our residents’ backgrounds. Unique to The Crestone and Arrow Senior Living, each month, we also celebrate several Arrow Traditions. These include focusing on Black History Month, Mom and Pop Small Business Day, Be Kind to Humankind Week, and so many more!

A cheerful community gathers for a photo, giving thumbs up with big smiles at The Crestone Senior Living opening.

Embracing Traditions and Celebrating Diversity in Our Community

My favorite way to contribute to the culture of my community is by fully embracing the traditions we uphold and engaging in meaningful conversations with residents from diverse backgrounds. Whether it’s participating in cultural celebrations or simply chatting with residents eager to share their past experiences and traditions. I find immense value in gaining insights into the richness of everyone’s heritage. This knowledge allows me to share and spread cultural understanding among those around me.

I strongly believe that culture is essential because it reflects our unique backgrounds and personal histories. It encompasses various aspects such as food, religion, ceremonial practices, and much more. Even as we age, there’s always room to learn and grow, and senior living offers wonderful opportunities to exchange knowledge and explore different cultures from around the world. By embracing and celebrating diversity, we foster a more inclusive and enriching community for everyone involved.

Every senior living community has its own culture built around the engagement and interactions of the residents. I am proud to set the stage for socialization and events for my residents as we continue building and expanding our culture at The Crestone Senior Living.
